Traveling back in time, Ranger originally derived its name from the Texas Rangers, who had a camp nearby back in the 1870s. By 1880, the area transformed from a tent city into a flourishing permanent town thanks to the Texas and Pacific Railway. In just a couple of decades, Ranger grew into a vibrant trade center, boasting doctors, schools, and a bustling community.

Fast forward to the 1930s, when the Early Motor Court Era kicked off—a charming tourist camp atop Ranger Hill that welcomed motorists from all over it was named The Lone Star Chicken INN and Gulf Station. In a thrilling moment in February 1934, the Barrow Gang pulled off a daring raid at the local armory, speeding past the Gulf Inn with stolen firearms in tow. Such electrifying tales have helped shape the rich tapestry of Ranger’s history!

Bonnie & Clyde Robbed Ranger Armory

However, the construction of Interstate 20 in the 1970s diverted traffic away from the old highway, leaving the vintage motor court buildings forgotten for years. But fear not! A modern restoration has breathed new life into the place, transforming it into the Gulf Burgers and Lone Ranger RV Park & Lodge, featuring stunning vintage neon aesthetics, beautifully restored 1930s lodges, a resort-style pool, and, of course, the incredible Gulf Burgers restaurant.

Speaking of Gulf Burgers, it’s DAVID CASSEL’S pride and joy! Housed in a lovingly restored 1930s Gulf gas station, this eatery is a labor of love for him. Having spent years curating vintage porcelain and neon signs, he wanted to revitalize a treasured piece of Americana.

He’s excited to have Jason, my talented managing partner, alongside him; we’re looking to expand and build my dream! Their hotel, lodging and culinary journey is just beginning. Join them for an unforgettable experience in Texas! You’re goimng to love RANGER HILL because Jana and I sure did.
