Smoke City Proz BBQ – DFW

Hello, Fried Chicken Lovers!
Five years ago, we released our first “Best Fried Chicken” article, and I’ve been eager to create a new list of top fried chicken spots for over four years. But like fried chicken itself, you just can’t rush perfection. We’ve been sampling fried chicken all over the USA, but this article focuses specifically on my home area of North Texas. From casual dining to fast-casual and even fast-food joints, I’m excited to finally reveal what I consider to be the best fried chicken in North Texas for 2025.
Let me ask you a question: Have you ever enjoyed smoked fried chicken that’s hand-prepared, fried, and then smoked on a real smoker? Or have you tasted Southern fried chicken with a skin so crispy it’s OSA—Oh-So-Addictive? How about Mexican-inspired fried chicken prepared with fifteen different fresh spices that are so flavorful they’ll blow your mind? If those don’t sound appealing, what about red chili fried chicken that’s so delicious it makes your taste buds dance? And there’s more! Think of Grandma’s fried chicken, sweet and spicy fried chicken, or even honey-dusted fried chicken. So sit back and buckle up because I’ve got all this and more!
I want to clarify that this isn’t about hot chicken or chicken tenders—that’s a different story. With so many places offering various types of chicken nowadays, it’s important to specify what I mean by fried chicken. I’m referring to fresh, bone-in chicken that’s fried to **GBD**—Golden Brown and Delicious every time. According to Wikipedia, “Southern fried chicken,” commonly known as fried chicken, consists of pieces of chicken coated with seasoned flour or batter, which are then pan-fried, deep-fried, pressure-fried, or air-fried. The breading forms a crisp coating on the chicken while keeping the meat juicy.
I wrote about this in my last fried chicken article and I’m going to emphasize it again because I feel it’s important.
Growing up, we served fried chicken at some of our Chapman family restaurants, and it was quite good. Under our restaurant umbrella, we also owned a Church’s Fried Chicken franchise, where I truly learned the preparation techniques and the time it takes to cook and deliver fresh fried chicken. There are no shortcuts in this process—if you try to skip a step, you’re asking for subpar chicken. While preparing fried chicken isn’t overly technical, I genuinely believe that simple cooking processes can sometimes be the hardest to execute. The simpler the dish, the fewer opportunities there are to hide flaws in the preparation.
If you’ve been following me, you know how I feel: “nothing goes better with a delicious meal than family, good friends, and a great story.” That being said, let’s talk fried chicken!
When I was a young boy, there was a lady cook named Mercedes who catered for people around Fort Worth. She cooked many dishes, but two of them stood out to me. You can probably guess one was southern fried chicken. It was true skillet-fried chicken made in a cast iron skillet—the kind where every bite is succulent, flavorful, and the juices run down your chin, getting all over your grubby little fingers. I can promise you, the term “finger-licking good” came from dedicated, hard-working southern ladies like Mercedes who never cut corners. Simply put, it was her way or no way in the kitchen!
I will never forget the time I was outside beneath some big trees and smelled the chicken cooking. I rushed inside and told her I was hungry—probably more like ten or twenty times, like a parrot on a sugar high when it came to food. Even as a child, I had little patience, and when it came to Mercedes’ fried chicken, I had even less. I kept pestering her until she finally had enough. She turned and kicked me out of the house, locking the front door, saying, “I’ll open it as soon as I’m finished cooking my chicken, young man!” I was so intent on eating that chicken, worried someone else might get it before me. I climbed onto the windowsill and started tapping on the kitchen window frame and glass. Let’s just say she wasn’t too pleased, but I finally got to eat that incredible chicken.
I sat down at the table, and she served me two breasts and a leg, along with a generous helping of her homemade mashed potatoes made from fresh potatoes, butter, and smothered in white cream gravy. The steam was rising from the potatoes, and the fried chicken aroma was unforgettable. Every single bite of that chicken was savory, flavorful, and succulent perfection. It was always like that when she prepared it! The flavor and deliciousness never varied, which is why I’ve never forgotten how incredible her fried chicken dinners were.
Fried chicken must be prepared fresh, hand-dipped, and coated with a consistent and delicious signature batter. Mercedes used a real cast iron skillet and only cooked three pieces of chicken at a time. She made her own batter and hand-dipped each piece of fresh chicken individually. She never rushed, never changed her process. Her patience and passion for cooking showed that there are no shortcuts to achieving the deliciousness everyone loved. I truly miss that woman and her chicken; she meant a lot to me, and I always respected her and her culinary skills. I can still smell that meal now, and it makes my mouth water.
The purpose of this story is to share my love for fried chicken and how my passion for this Southern dish began in my childhood. As we traveled around enjoying fried chicken, I always thought of Mercedes. I hope you enjoy this journey as much as I have enjoyed my search for the BEST fried chicken in North Texas.
My current list includes some returning favorites as well as new discoveries I made while indulging in and researching the deliciousness of fried chicken. It’s time to rain down the flavor buckle up!
Mike’s Chicken Locations:
“Southern Style Crispy Fried Chicken”
1. 4234 Maple Ave #2403, Dallas, TX
2. 7752 Forest Ln, Dallas, TX
**Plano Location Opening in June 2025**
Six years ago, my friend Aaron Wang from Dallas recommended Mike’s Chicken to me for over a year before I finally decided to give it a try. I regret not taking his advice sooner. I receive suggestions daily—about three to four on average—but this recommendation was definitely worth it.
When we first visited Mike’s original location, it was inside a laundromat on Maple Ave in Dallas. Yes, you read that right—it was inside a laundromat! However, times have changed for the better. They now serve some of the BEST fried chicken, not only in Dallas but throughout the entire state of Texas.
Since our first visit, Mike’s has undergone significant changes. With their hard work and dedication to serving delicious fried chicken, they are building a small fried chicken empire in the Dallas area. They have remodeled the original location on Maple and added a second location in Dallas. Next month, they are set to open a NEW third location in Plano, Texas. There are lines out the door at all hours of the day, full dining rooms, and bustling parking lots. This proves that hard work and a commitment to outstanding food and customer satisfaction truly pay off.
Mike’s offers two types of Southern-style crispy fried chicken: Mike’s Original and Mike’s Spicy. The spicy flavor packs a punch while remaining flavorful. I consider Mike’s Original Southern Fried Chicken to be the BEST all-around fried chicken in North Texas. Every aspect of their chicken is perfect and consistent. The preparation, cooking, and presentation meet all my criteria for outstanding fried chicken: savory, crispy, and succulent, with just the right hint of salt and a whole lot of deliciousness. Simply put, they should rename Mike’s Chicken to “MORE” because you’ll crave MORE with each juicy bite. It’s R.I.D.I.C.U.L.O.U.S.—ridiculously delicious, that is! And don’t forget to try Mike’s buttery house biscuits; they are among the best you’ll ever taste. When you combine the delicious fried chicken with those house-made buttery biscuits, Mike’s is truly delivering an explosion of flavors in DALLAS!
**Mike’s Disclaimer:** Like any freshly made dishes, it takes time to prepare your order. Mike’s is not a fast-food restaurant; your food is prepared fresh for every order, so PLEASE be patient.
Brick & Bones
“Mexican Inspired Fried Chicken”
2713 Elm St, Dallas, TX 75226
I love this chicken so much that I featured it on my “Best Chicken Dishes” special on ABC Channel 8 a few years ago. Brick & Bones is located in Deep Ellum, right in the heart of the arts district. I find the name catchy! Classified as Mexican Fried Chicken, it’s a flavor experience you’ve probably never tasted before. They describe themselves as a throwback bar in Deep Ellum focused on craft Mexican fried chicken, great cocktails, and curated spirits.
They started in the kitchen and built a menu centered around Mexican-inspired fried chicken, which is their specialty! Prepared with fresh chicken and over 15 different fresh Mexican spices, it’s incredibly delicious. The first time I tasted this chicken, I was blown away by the flavor! I immediately ordered a second helping because one just wasn’t enough. If you love lip-smacking savory chicken—some of the BEST in North Texas—then head over to Brick & Bones. Tell them Big Trey sent you! And don’t forget to order the Mac-N-Cheese with your fried chicken.
Brick & Bones Backyard
“Mexican Inspired Fried Chicken”
3410 Main St, Rowlett, TX 75088
This is their new location in a historic old house in Rowlett, Texas. They are bringing their signature flavors to the heart of Rowlett, TX, in the historic Oliver House, fondly known as the “blue house” by locals. There, you’ll find the same beloved Mexican-inspired fried chicken, curated spirits, and seasonal cocktails that put them on the map. They have elevated their offerings with rotisserie chicken, which is brined for 48 hours and cooked to perfection for 1 hour and 20 minutes—because they believe in doing things right. For special occasions, the second floor features the Oliver Room, a private dining space surrounded by windows, perfect for private parties and gatherings. Basically, come for the mouth-watering chicken, and stay for the welcoming ambiance and expanded menu. We loved the new location and the upgraded menu!
Slow Bone Texas Barbeque
“Smoked Fried Chicken”
2234 Irving Blvd, Dallas, TX 75207
This place is a house built on deliciousness. Every single culinary delight and texas BBQ dish that comes out of the Slow Bone kitchen is simply magical. I know this because I’ve tried Jeffrey’s creations. Every bite you take will be unforgettable, and that’s what Jeffrey Hobbs believes. He is passionate about feeding your heart, mind, body, and soul. He wants you to enjoy every bite, and believe me, you will.
Let’s talk about his smoked fried chicken, which is pure perfection. It has the perfect texture and flavor, and each bite is juicy with a hint of smoke from the Slow Bone smokers. I swear it’s so delicious that you’re going to have indulgent dreams about it after your first bite. I’m telling you right now: RUN, don’t WALK, to Slow Bone and try his chicken. You’re going to be a customer for life! Throw that door open and let them know Ol’ Trey sent you to CHOW DOWN!
Roots Southern Table
“Duck Fat-Fried Chicken”
Address: Bee St Suit 160, Farmers Branch, TX
If you’ve never been to Roots Southern Table, I want to share a bit about it. Chef Tiffany is passionate about cooking and pays homage to the way she grew up eating in the South. Her grandmother always welcomed guests with food, and for Southern families, that food was what held them together. Back then, it was true farm-to-table eating. Chef Tiffany took her childhood memories from the South, added her own spin from what she learned living there, and created Roots Southern Table. I’ve enjoyed Chef Tiffany’s cuisine for years, and I love it.
If you appreciate fresh and delicious Southern dishes with a twist, I have something special for you. The twist is a fat that makes everything better: DUCK FAT. Yes, you heard me correctly. The hand-prepared fried chicken is fried not in old, greasy oil but in premium duck fat, which elevates it to another level. Each bite of Chef Tiffany’s chicken is slightly crispy, succulent, and bursting with flavor beyond words. It’s lip-smacking, knee-tapping, foot-stomping deliciousness. If you’ve never tried it, it’s a must, especially if you’re a fried chicken lover. Before you head over to Roots, make sure to have a reservation!
Drew’s Place Soul Food
“Southern Soul Searching Fried Chicken”
5701 Curzon Ave, Fort Worth, TX 76107
Located in Fort Worth on the west side off Curzon Street, Drew’s Place has a fantastic old-school atmosphere. I had to include their fried chicken because it’s some of the BEST anywhere. It is simple, perfect and delicious every time! They use fresh chicken and a house-made batter to fry their chicken, achieving that Golden Brown and Delicious (GBD) quality every single time. The chicken is savory, loaded with great flavors, slightly crispy, and has a unique flavor profile that really shouts “Drew’s.” You’ll be tempted to lick your fingers to savor every last drop of that flavor-packed chicken juice. Don’t forget to order some of their house-prepared sides like greens; everything from Drew’s Place is a trip to Deliciousville! Plus, the people there are some of the BEST you will ever meet! DO NOT forget your sweets!
Little Red Wasp Kitchen + Bar
“Grandma’s Fried Chicken”
808 Main Street, Fort Worth, Texas
If you’re looking for a destination where everything on the menu is prepared fresh from scratch and brimming with unforgettable culinary delights, then The Wasp is the place to be. I’ve been telling everyone for years that the menu at The Wasp is the barometer of deliciousness. Chef Blaine and Adam have created a restaurant with a laid-back vibe, a colorful and inviting atmosphere, and a menu that offers something for everyone. When I say that Chef Blaine is the master of deliciousness, I’m serious. I’ve featured many of his culinary creations on TV news segments and in “Best Of” lists—so many that I’ve lost count. Anything you try will be a flavor explosion in your mouth. That’s why it’s no surprise that his “Grandma’s Fried Chicken” is on this list.
Grandma’s Fried Chicken is prepared fresh by hand, and the process doesn’t begin until you place your order. It’s served HF&D: Hot, Fresh, and Delicious every single time. The skin has the perfect sheen, and each bite is slightly crispy, flavor-packed, and so delicious that it should be illegal in all 50 states. I’m serious—it’s that good! If you don’t believe me, go try it for yourself. It’s served with a side of whipped potatoes, garlic hot honey, and fried rosemary. Don’t blame me when you find it so delicious that you become addicted and keep returning to The Wasp for more. That’s what will happen, I promise. So throw that door open and tell them Trey sent you for some life-changing fried chicken!
Tupelo Honey Southern Kitchen & Bar
“Honey Dusted Fried Chicken”
“Sweet and Spicy Fried Chicken”
The Star, Frisco, Texas
Some of my greatest culinary discoveries happen by accident, especially when I’m not even looking for them. Tupelo Honey is a prime example of this. During my stay at the Omni Frisco Hotel, I came across their menu and decided to pop in for a meal. That decision turned out to be life-changing after my first bite.
It’s rare for me to find two standout dishes from the same restaurant, but after twenty-five years of writing about unique and delicious foods, I can confidently say that Chef Eric and his culinary team at Tupelo Honey have created two of the best fried chicken dishes, not just in North Texas, but in the entire United States. I’ve tried fried chicken from LA to Miami, and Tupelo Honey’s bone-in fried chicken is simply dripping with deliciousness!
No matter which fried chicken you choose—“Honey Dusted Fried Chicken” or “Sweet and Spicy Fried Chicken”—you will be in for a treat. Both dishes are prepared fresh, slightly crispy, and served with a side of Southern-O-Liciousness. One is sweet, while the other is sweet and spicy. Each bite will leave you wanting more. In fact, I think these dishes should be renamed to “MORE” because that’s all you’ll want—more!
If you love fried chicken, Tupelo Honey is a must-try. Just walk in and order “MORE” because you’ll definitely want it!
Midland Hotel Chop House and 1896 Saloon
“Fresh Red Chile Fried Chicken”
103 N Pecan St, Hico, TX 76457
The Midland Hotel has roots dating back to 1891. Located in Hico, Texas, it has a rich history that began as Joel Fisher’s Hotel. It was later renamed by Mrs. Lula Stovall and became a brick landmark in the small town. The hotel served as a hub for travelers and community events, even accommodating boarders who later became part of the Stovall family in the 1900s. Known for its unique architectural style, it played a significant role in the town’s early development. Although the hotel has faced challenges, including a fire and periods of vacancy, it has been restored to its original “Turn of the Century” glory and is now even better, featuring an unforgettable chophouse and saloon.
Oh dear, thank you to the fried chicken gods! We cannot express enough gratitude to Chef Eric for his inspiration in creating the Red Chile Fried Chicken. This dish is pure perfection—the texture, crunch, and flavor profile are not only unique but also incredibly delicious. Every bite makes your taste buds dance and brings joy to your mouth. This is some of the most flavorful fried chicken you will ever experience. I absolutely love this chicken; it’s worth a trip from anywhere to enjoy. It’s served with braised collard greens, whipped potatoes, house-cured bacon country gravy, and a side of unforgettable flavors.
Fixe Southern House
“Southern Fried Chicken”
Fort Worth and Austin, Texas
It all began in Austin for Fixe Southern House, slinging fresh, prepared Southern deliciousness. They expanded to Fort Worth, and the rest is history. They’ve been offering magical culinary delights ever since. Chef James is known for his creative take on Southern dishes, putting his unique spin on them to make everything FIXE DELICIOUS!
Fixe is recognized for its modern approach to classic Southern comfort food, particularly its unbelievable biscuits, which are cooked to order every single time. These biscuits are simply some of the best I’ve ever enjoyed, anywhere. But I want to focus on their mouth-watering, legendary fried chicken that will smack you in the face with it’s unbelievably deliciousness.
The magic starts when you place your order. They prepare the chicken fresh, and it arrives at your table GBD—Golden, Brown, and Delicious. After you take that first bite, you’re transported to that legendary spot I like to call “Fixe Southern House Deliciousness.” This feeling will continue until your dish is gone. If you’re like me, the flavors of the fried chicken are so savory and vibrant that I sometimes don’t even breathe between bites. Yes, it’s that delicious! When I say it will smack you in the face—that’s exactly what it does. Smack, crack, and Ka-POW its way into your heart forever. If you haven’t tried FIXE yet, you need to do so quickly. And don’t forget the fresh, warm, unforgettable biscuits!
Chef James has a new concept in Austin called Hissy Fit that you absolutely need to check out. It’s in my TOP TEN new places to try in Austin. Chef James has done it again with Hissy Fit—it’s a must-visit!
LO-LO’s Chicken and Waffles
“Southern Style Fried Chicken and Waffles”
1450 114, Grapevine, Texas
We literally discovered this place by accident. After flying back from another food tour in Los Angeles, we researched more fried chicken spots in the DFW area while on the plane. LO-LO’s Chicken and Waffles kept popping up everywhere, and we couldn’t believe we hadn’t heard of this place located in Grapevine, Texas. I told Jana that as soon as they brought us our car, we were heading to meet LO-LO. Once we jumped in the car and they shut our doors, we sped off to meet this famous chicken joint.
As soon as we got out of the car, I could smell the aromas of southern fried chicken wafting in the air. The scent of fried chicken is always recognizable to me, like the flavor gods are raining down chicken goodness. I knew I was about to chow down! When you add a fresh, fluffy waffle into the mix, well, things get O.S.A – Oh, So Addictive.
If you ask LO-LO’s which came first – the chicken or the waffle – they’ll tell you that it doesn’t matter because one isn’t the same without the other. Their obsession with creating the juiciest, most flavorful fried chicken and the fluffiest, melt-in-your-mouth waffles has sparked an underground soul food revolution.
We sat down and ordered, and I was extremely impressed with the service, the extensive menu selection, the Texas-sized tea glasses, and the wide array of cocktails. It’s truly “hood certified.” How can you go wrong with that? Soul food deliciousness is always on tap at LO-LO’s!
The fried chicken was cooked to perfection, slightly crunchy on the outside with soft, succulent, flavorful meat on the inside. It was so juicy that I couldn’t help but let some drip down my chin with each bite. The waffle was fluffy and absolutely delicious. The fried chicken and biscuit combo is simply stupid delicious; it’s stacked and packed with golden-brown perfection, combining savory and sweet flavors.
Everything we tried was bursting with flavor and absolutely delicious. LO-LO’s is a must-visit if you love soul food and award-worthy crispy fried chicken. Don’t forget, it’s hood certified with service provided with big smiles.
Gus’s Fried Chicken
“Hot and Spicy Fried Chicken”
1067 W Magnolia Ave, Fort Worth, TX 76104
I know this is considered Nashville Hot Chicken, but I don’t care because it’s downright delicious. Gus claims it’s the best fried chicken on the planet, but you won’t understand what he means until you try a piece or two for yourself! I’m telling you: this spicy, crispy fried chicken will give you chicken dreams while you sleep. I have those same dreams, which is why I always head to Gus’s in Fort Worth. The chicken is savory, light, crispy, and has just the right amount of heat that you will fall in love with. The legend goes that someone once asked Gus Vanderbilt for his fried chicken recipe, and he simply replied, “I ain’t telling.” They marinate the chicken overnight, add a little of this and a dash of that, and then toss it in the fryer. By the time you get the finished product, it’s fresh, hot, a little spicy, and has a deliciously crunchy skin. I can’t ever stop eating it. All I know is Ol’ Gus knows what he’s doing. I’m sure he’ll never share his legendary chicken recipe. Fortunately, you can eat as much as you can buy. Be sure to take a bib, some wipes, and get some chicken to go while you’re at it! It’s a trip straight to Chicken Deliciousville.

Streets Fine Chicken Restaurants
“Southern Fried Chicken” and “Chicken Fried Bacon”
3857 Cedar Springs Rd, Dallas, TX 75219

It’s the ideal combination of soft, savory bacon covered in a delicious Streets batter, resulting in a golden brown, mouthwatering treat. This dish is truly unforgettable because it’s pure BACON RIDICULOUSNESS!
Jesus Family Restaurant
“Southern Fried Chicken”
810 S Main St, Fort Worth, TX 76104
Located on far south Main Street, this restaurant has been a staple for over 50 years, inspired by Jesus’s dream of serving fresh Mexican food, BBQ, and delicious meals for hungry people in Cowtown. Although Jesus has passed on, his family continues to run the restaurant in the same spirit, upholding his values. They offer a wide variety of freshly prepared dishes, including house-fried pies on special occasions. The portions are always generous and fairly priced, catering to those with hearty appetites.
I love the fresh, house-prepared fried chicken. It has the perfect texture and color. With a slight crunch in every bite, it’s so succulent that you’ll want to have a napkin handy before enjoying your first bite. As soon as you take that first bite, the flavor will overwhelm your taste buds and have them dancing with delight. It’s simply flavor packing and never lacking. Be prepared to wait because they prepare it fresh to order.

Lisa’s does it right! They use fresh chicken, hand-batter it with Lisa’s special house batter, and fry it to perfection. I have constant cravings for Lisa’s, and now I can order it straight to my house. It’s always savory, slightly crispy, and packed with deliciousness. And why not? It’s hand-prepared with love in the kitchen, and everyone follows that recipe for success. If you haven’t checked out Lisa’s, you should try them and grab some fried catfish too. – Trey “Chow Down” Chapman, Fried Chicken Professor, Travel and Food Lover.
Howdy Sweets and Cinnamon Roll Lovers,
As you know, Trey’s Chow Down road trips the USA for creative chefs, tasty eats, savory sweet treats, and unique travel destinations. Today we’re in League City, TX, a suburb of Houston, to enjoy some of the biggest cinnamon rolls, sweet donuts, and incredible pastries – all prepared fresh at Bonnie’s Donuts.
They say everything is bigger in Texas, and that includes the desserts! That holds true here in League City, thanks to Bonnie’s Donuts and their 5 and 10-pound cinnamon rolls. I couldn’t believe the size of these monsters. The customers we spoke with said that every thing is delectable, delicious, and worth checking out especially the FRESH 5 and 10 pound cinnamon rolls.
The owner Natalie Chun has been making these gigantic rolls with her husband for a about five years. Natalie came to the U.S. from Cambodia 8 years ago to pursue her dream of owning a business. She started out working for a local baker and when the opportunity came to purchase Bonnie’s Donuts, she didn’t hesitate. The cinnamon rolls quickly became a fan favorite thanks to social media, food bloggers, and YouTube channels.
I was lucky enough to be invited in to try some of their award-winning donuts and the Texas-size cinnamon rolls. I was shocked at how heavy, dense, and massive the rolls were. Each batch, which includes an estimated pound of cinnamon, takes roughly two hours to prepare. When I picked up the ten-pound cinnamon roll I was smiling ear to ear and couldn’t wait to get my icing on and start chowing down!
If you appreciate creative chefs and unique flavor profiles that deliver exceptional culinary experiences, then this event is perfect for you. It is one of the premier culinary events in Texas—and possibly the USA—bringing together top chefs, local farmers, and food enthusiasts. It’s truly a must-attend event!
I know this because I travel coast to coast, from Los Angeles to Miami and everywhere in between, exploring food events and searching for delicious dishes, creative chefs, and unique sweet treats. But you don’t have to travel everywhere; you can just attend the Chefs for Farmers event, and it’s like taking a food trip around the world without ever leaving Texas.
The festivities kick off each year with a week filled with activities for everyone to enjoy. No matter your taste preferences, there’s something for everyone. The chefs create fantastic dishes, showcasing meaty, savory, sweet options, and combinations of sweet and savory. Attendees can laugh, eat, drink, and savor wines or bubbly while enjoying the spirit of Texas throughout the week.

It’s just a five-minute walk from Choctaw Stadium, a seven-minute walk from Cowboys AT&T Stadium, and only steps away from the Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Field. For added fun, Six Flags Theme Park and Six Flags Hurricane Harbor are also just five minutes away.
Upon entering the hotel, I was struck by its modern and stunning beauty, featuring vibrant colors and spacious areas. Walking from the elevator to our room felt both classy and cozy. When we opened the door to the suite, we were mesmerized. The large bay windows provided a breathtaking view of the Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Field, so close it felt like you could reach out and touch it. From another window, we could see AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.
If you love sports, live events and good times this suite is a must visit. It’s a Trey’s Chow Down Travel Favorite!
Howdy Travel Fans,
It’s not possiable to describe how awesome the Midland Hotel and Chophouse truly is in just a few paragraphs but I will try. Giddy up!
An Incredible Travel and Delicious Destination When it comes to history, the Midland Hotel is truly captivating. The hotel opened on June 14, 1891, with reports indicating that Joel Fisher’s Hotel was nearing completion. By that time, the brickwork was almost finished, and the project was about to be handed over to the carpenters. Although it wasn’t officially named at that time, this structure was recognized as the Midland Hotel, as there were no other brick hotels in Hico then. The rest is a history in the making. Over the years, the hotel has experienced fire, renovations, and several remodels throughout its long and glorious history of 134 years.
The hotel is absolutely incredible, located right in the heart of downtow, with a large outdoor patio overlooking all the downtown activity. I enjoy sitting in the chairs, reminiscing about the days of old and the outlaws who once roamed these streets. With beautiful Texas-style furniture, creaky wooden floors, vibrant colors, and wide-open spaces inside, the ambiance is inviting. The exterior offers numerous patios and outdoor areas to enjoy the fresh Texas air and the bustling surroundings of downtown Hico. It’s also home to a variety of shops, restaurants, sweet shops, and even a fantastic store that provides a Texas-size selection of candy, popcorn, and fudge, all prepared fresh daily.
You can’t forget the amazing chef-driven, from-scratch kitchen at the Midland Chophouse. The menu is packed with Chef Eric’s fresh and delicious creations. Some highlights include his Pimento Cheese Croquettes, Reuben Sandwich, Red Chile Fried Chicken, House Made Cavatelli Pasta, Pork Chop Milanesa, Chicken-n-Biscuit, and Brisket Cheddar Biscuit. I won’t even mention his sweet and savory desserts, as just the thought of Chef Eric’s delicious offerings will make your mouth water. All I have to say is, “It’s so fresh and delicious it should be illegal in all 50 states—and don’t even get me started on the RED CHILE FRIED CHICKEN. OMG!”
The Petty Brothers King Suite overlooks downtown and is perfect for a weekend getaway. It features a king-sized bed, a small couch, and a dining area for two. It’s cozy, romantic, and unforgettable. If you’re looking for something exciting and unique, where the floors and walls tell a story, the Midland Hotel is the place to be. I highly recommend taking a ride down to check out Hico! They’re an officially approved Trey’s Chow Down Travel and Dining Experience that’s unforgettable.

Hello, Travel Hounds!
I’ve embarked on a five-year travel adventure, exploring unique and exciting places to stay in Texas. From luxurious high-rise suites and cozy private ranch casitas to innovative stacked container suites, there are even overnight accommodations in a stunning grain silo! If you think a grain silo is unusual, how about futuristic private pods overlooking the Texas Hill Country? The variety of options available is incredible. You can choose from historic lodgings, charming 1950s trailers, and suites once frequented by infamous gangsters. Additionally, there are suites that overlook the Dallas Cowboys practice field or the Texas Rangers Ballpark. You certainly can’t forget one of the oldest inns in Texas, originally opened in 1860. As the second oldest continuously running inn or hotel in the state, travelers have parked their wagons, horses, or vehicles at this iconic inn for over 160 years.
Have you ever visited the Texas White House? How about spending the night in a 1960s presidential press room or enjoying wine at a castle in Texas? Even more intriguing, you can sip Texas wine while petting a rhinoceros named Blake. If that sounds wild, consider sleeping in a giraffe barn! If that isn’t adventurous enough for you, how about enjoying fresh-baked French pastries while admiring new Rolls Royce motor cars in the middle of a hotel lobby?
These locations offer a wide array of activities, including shopping, swimming, sightseeing, and interacting with wildlife and exotic animals. There’s truly something for everyone, regardless of budget, and I’m excited to share my discoveries! Again, don’t miss the chance to meet Blake, the sweet rhino, for some petting and a scratch. There’s genuinely something for everyone, and I can’t wait to share my experiences. I feel that traveling leaves you speechless and then turns you into a storyteller.

A few years ago, Jana and I stayed at the Renaissance Austin, a fantastic hotel in North Austin, Texas. When someone asked us about other unique places in Texas that we had recently stayed at or visited, I couldn’t help but reflect on our experiences. As I soaked in the hot tub, sipping on some Texas whiskey also known as “TX Whiskey” I felt inspired. At that moment, I decided to write an article for travel enthusiasts around the world, showcasing the wonderful places you can stay in Texas.
Each destination we’ve listed offers something unique or historically significant. Visiting a place that captures your heart and soul and provides an unforgettable experience is something worth sharing. I believe in spreading the love for creative chefs, delicious food, sweet treats, and unforgettable travel destinations.
“If you love to travel, you’ll cherish these destinations. There’s something enjoyable for everyone. Ease your mind and ‘Soothe Your Soul in Unique Suites and Destinations in Texas’ by choosing one or all of these wonderful places.”

The Bentley Hotel and Castle on Highway 290 – Fredericksburg, TX
Any Room or 2-Story King Suite
As we cruised down Highway 290 toward Fredericksburg, Jana suddenly and loudly exclaimed, “Trey, did you see that castle?” I jokingly asked her if she had started drinking wine already, even though it was only 8 AM. To my surprise, it really was a castle—a magnificent structure with a new hotel right next to it. I thought, if that’s not intriguing, I don’t know what is! A castle on a hill in Texas, with a brand-new hotel beside it? That just screams UNIQUE!
The following week, we made reservations at the NEW Bentley Hotel on Highway 290, adjacent to the Wine Castle. Making those reservations was a great decision because the Bentley Hotel is absolutely incredible. It’s a true destination that is not only unique but also inviting, relaxing, charming, and comfortable. You really don’t need to leave once you check in for the weekend.
The hotel features twelve rooms and two suites, along with a resort-style pool and an outdoor wine cabana bar, serving all your favorite wine cocktails and culinary delights! Enjoy a wine cocktail after check-in on Friday night, take a dip in the lounge pool or hot tub, and order a pizza for dinner on Saturday. You can visit the Wine Castle just up the hill, enjoy some tasty wines and snacks, and learn about wines in a cozy and inviting castle atmosphere.
Let me ask you: Have you ever visited a real castle in Texas? Have you ever sipped fine wine in a castle in Texas? Have you ever relaxed in a hot tub at a castle in Texas? If the answer is NO, then you know what to do—pick up the phone or slap taht key board and make that reservation!

Warwick Melrose Uptown – Dallas, TX
Presidental and Delux Suites
The hotel is truly magnificent! I have been visiting for years and have fond memories of meeting my mother at the world-famous Library Bar for cocktails, delicious food, and the beautiful sounds of live piano and jazz music. The Library Bar is a must-visit, even if you’re not staying at the hotel, because it offers a unique experience in itself.
You also need to enjoy a meal at the Landmark Prime Rib (IG Video) restaurant located in the lobby. Oh my, the restaurant is marvelous! I spent four hours dining there, savoring a five-course meal and engaging with the chef about each delightful course. It was an unforgettable experience!
The suites are cozy and warm, exuding intimacy and grandeur with beautiful decor that recalls a bygone era. They are both classic and contemporary, and you will fall in love as soon as you open the door and step inside.
The old-fashioned charm of the hotel is captivating and unforgettable. Originally built in 1924, the Warwick Dallas was designated a historic landmark in 1983. Considered a Grande Dame of Dallas, this elegant hotel is situated on Oak Lawn in the upscale neighborhoods of Turtle Creek and Highland Park, with grand architecture that reflects its rich history.
The video Warwick Melrose is truly magnificent, exuding elegance, charm, and a cozy, comfortable atmosphere.
Thompson Hotel Riverwalk – San Antonio, TX
Senenity Suite with King Bed
When we heard about the beautiful hotel offering fantastic views of the Riverwalk and downtown, we knew we had to visit. The Thompson is new to San Antonio, having opened in the middle of 2021. Its classy, cozy, and vibrant atmosphere makes it feel like it has been there forever.
There are many rooms available, each designed to make you feel like royalty. We enjoyed a Serenity Suite that featured a living room, bar area, and an incredible bathroom complete with a spa tub. The staff and room service were exceptional; they made us feel like old friends. If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway, this is the place to be.
The Thompson is truly impressive, rising above the Riverwalk for an elevated experience in this cultural epicenter. It offers stunning, unmatched skyline views, cozy and refined guest rooms, creative culinary delights, and outstanding service. You can immerse yourself in the vibrant nightlife at the rooftop lounge, The Moon’s Daughter, or enjoy a Texas whiskey at the bar while taking in the splendid San Antonio skyline.
The Stockyards Hotel – Fort Worth, TexasÂ
Bonnie and Clyde Junior Gangster Suite
I was born and raised in Fort Worth, and it’s hard to believe that more people don’t know about the history and significance of the Stockyards Hotel. My family has been involved in business in the Stockyards since the hotel was built in the early 1900s. It symbolizes the Stockyards and represents the foundation of Fort Worth’s livestock industry.
As they say, it’s the Old West at its best! Cowboys and cattle barons, kings and queens of country music, and even a few outlaws have found refuge and romance at the Stockyards Hotel. Patrons have traveled from near and far by foot, horseback, stagecoach, motorcar, and plane—to experience the incomparable hospitality of this historic premier hotel. Every time I walk through the doors, I feel like I’ve stepped back in time.
The Bonnie and Clyde Junior Suite is the actual room occupied by Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker during their 1933 stay in Fort Worth amid their infamous crime spree. From this suite, you can look out the same window they did before robbing a bank. It features a king-size bed, a comfortable seating area, a dining table with four chairs, a writing desk with a chair, and a full bathroom. The suite offers a fantastic view overlooking the Stockyards and includes memorabilia reflecting the lives of Bonnie and Clyde, as well as a poem written by Bonnie for Clyde.
Omni La Mansion Del Rio River Walk – San Antonio, TX
River Walk and Delux River Walk Suites
This magical spot is located in the heart of the River Walk. When I say heart, I mean right in the epicenter of all the River Walk festivities. You won’t find a better location for enjoying time along the River Walk. Open the door and walk down the steps, and you’re immediately next to the water.
As you enter, the suite exudes coziness with its wooden beam low ceilings, old-fashioned exposed brick walls, and rustic Spanish Texas decor. You will feel like you’re staying at a friend’s home along the beautiful river, surrounded by sights and sounds of happiness.
The hotel seamlessly blends old-world charm with modern luxury, offering an unparalleled experience for both business and leisure travelers. With Spanish colonial-inspired architecture and impeccable service, the hotel provides a sophisticated retreat along the picturesque San Antonio River Walk. You can also enjoy the private pool area located within the Omni courtyard.
The Barfield Historic Hotel – Amarillo, TX
The Premier Suite
When you visit the heart of the Texas Panhandle, a stay at the historic Barfield Hotel is a must. I’m going to say it more than once “I love this hotel” and it’s story. We had an office in Amarillo for years as part of our families West Texas operations, and there are two unforgettable things about this city: the aroma of money wafting through the air from the feedlots and the enchanting Barfield Hotel.
Originally known as the Oliver-Eakle Building, the Barfield Hotel was constructed in 1926 as Amarillo’s first skyscraper by businesswoman Melissa Dora Oliver-Eakle.
Upon entering, you instantly feel as if you’ve stepped back in time—in a good way. Your suite will be cozy and relaxing, making it hard to want to leave. This oversized suite features ample space to unwind or reconnect, with separate living areas and a master bedroom, along with a dedicated workstation equipped with multiple plug-in panels. Indulge in the luxurious shower and well-lit vanity, and enjoy a restful night’s sleep thanks to advanced soundproofing and blackout curtains.
Don’t forget to visit Amarillo’s Italian Steakhouse & Speakeasy Bar in the lobby. It offers exceptional chef-driven dining options. This Texas-style Italian steakhouse features a speakeasy bar inspired by the Prohibition era. It promises a fun atmosphere, delicious food, and unforgettable experiences. This is a must-visit!
I LOVE this hotel because my family has been involved in cattle ranching in Texas for over 170 years. The Barfield Hotel embraces the cattle-ranching culture of West Texas while welcoming guests with authentic Southern hospitality that reeks of Texas history.
The Interstate Inn (Texas Roadside) Stephenville, TX
The Texas King Suite
Oh, how I love this place! I’m a sucker for historic old roadside inns, and this one is pure perfection. It’s unique, lovely, modern, and offers memorable experiences. Originally opened over sixty years ago, this old roadside inn has been reimagined while maintaining its historic charm and incorporating sophisticated modern designs. It beautifully blends contemporary comfort with the mid-century charm of the original 1965 inn.
The King Suite is new, colorful, vibrant, and boasts a cool vibe. The decor is hip, modern, and just plain stylish. I fell in love with this suite as soon as we opened the door.
If you’re hungry, you can dine at celebrity chef Stephan Piles new restaurant, THE SEEKER. It’s a from-scratch kitchen that offers delicious dishes layered with flavors that will take you straight to deliciousville.
The best way to describe the INTERSTATE INN experience is this: As soon as you pull up, you will notice it’s a special place to relax and enjoy the cozy, modern environment, offering an elevated hospitality experience in a small-town setting that you will fall in love with just as we did. We highly recommend that you visit this spectacular new property in beautiful Stephenville, Texas.
Post Oak Hotel – Uptown Houston, TX
The Executive Suite
Oh my! I can’t believe I just walked into this incredibly elegant hotel. That’s exactly what you will say, because that’s what I said. Imagine entering a hotel and being greeted by the delightful aromas of an award-winning pastry shop. The shop, named Bouchée, offers both traditional and extravagant Parisian-inspired treats with a modern twist.
After enjoying the sweet scents, you stroll past the new Rolls Royces prominently displayed for sale. Yes, there’s a Rolls Royce dealership right in the lobby, and you still haven’t made it to the front desk yet! I’m usually hard to impress, but let me tell you, the Post Oak is truly astonishing! It’s the only Texas Forbes Five-Star Hotel and Spa, featuring elegant accommodations that create a world of pure hotel bliss. As soon as you walk through the door, you’ll find yourself in what I like to call “unforgettable-ville.” I was so captivated that I spent an hour admiring the stunning Rolls Royce displays and enjoying pastries before I even made it to the front desk. It’s simply breathtaking!
The suites offered here are in a different class altogether. I believe they have eight different suites. If you’re looking to splurge on something luxurious, Suite 32 is the perfect choice. I can’t even begin to describe how wonderful this place is! We stayed in the Executive Suite, which was absolutely incredible. It features a spacious living area, a master bedroom, and an amazing bathroom. But the views alone are worth every penny!
If you’re headed to Houston, the Post Oak is a must-visit. I dare say it’s one of my top hotels in the USA, and it’s truly a destination worth experiencing. Splurge on a Rolls Royce before heading out.
Lowes Hotel LIVE by Loews – Arlington, TX
Corner Luxury Sport Suite
If you could envision a hotel set in a sporting environment, this would be it. I had no idea what to expect when we reserved the suite, but it completely exceeded my expectations.
As you drive up, you realize you are in a sports mecca truly at the heart of the Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys, and numerous live sporting events, concerts, and entertainment venues. It’s just a five-minute walk from Choctaw Stadium, a seven-minute walk from Cowboys AT&T Stadium, and only steps away from the Texas Rangers Globe Life Field.
The large bay windows provided a breathtaking view of the Texas Rangers Globe Life Field, so close it felt like you could reach out and touch it. From another window, we could see AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.
Loews Hotel – Arlington
Grand Corner Suite
The Loews Hotel, connected by a stunning glass sky bridge, is located between two iconic sports stadiums: Globe Life Field and AT&T Stadium. It is also adjacent to Texas Live. This property completes the Loews trilogy at the Loews complex in Arlington. Our stay in a beautiful corner suite offered breathtaking views of Globe Life Field, Texas Live, and AT&T Stadium, making it an unforgettable destination.
With 888 rooms, the Loews Arlington Hotel is a unique meeting and resort destination, the first of its kind in the area. It is linked to the new Arlington Convention Center, making it ideal for leisure travelers, sports enthusiasts, and business meetings. The hotel provides top-notch amenities, a modern and innovative design, and exceptional service at every turn.
Guests can enjoy five restaurants and lounges, including a three-meal indoor/outdoor restaurant that features two wood-fired pizza ovens and homemade pasta prepared on-site. The resort-style beach club offers two pools, cabanas, fire pits, and a water slide. Additionally, the full-service spa and salon provide a variety of treatments, including massages, facials, manicures, pedicures, and blowouts. The fitness center is equipped with Technogym cardio equipment, weight machines, and free weights.

The Stoneleigh Le Meridien, Uptown Dallas, TX
Jr. Suite and Presidential Suite
As someone who appreciates beautiful and historic hotels, I was immediately captivated by this property, which exudes history and luxury. Upon stepping inside, I could feel the history enveloping the atmosphere with its abundant class and charm. (My IG Video tells the story)
Built during the big band era, this hotel evokes the spirit of glamorous travel, where classic style meets modern elegance in a chic Uptown location. The stunning 1923 Art Deco building is both architecturally impressive and comfortably inviting.
The suites are beautifully decorated, featuring warm cinnabar and charcoal color palettes, along with modern amenities, custom mahogany furnishings, and marble-topped surfaces. The bathrooms boast sleek black-and-white Calcutta marble flooring and elegant chrome fixtures—simply warm and charming! We loved both suites we explored, and the hotel service was exceptional. Don’t forget to visit the awesome PERLE on MAPLE for some chef driven deliciousnes. You have to visit the hotel lobbby bar, pool, and lounge area—you’ll thank me later!

Midland Hotel and Chophouse – Historic Hico, Texas
Chapter 203 – Petty Brothers King Suite
When it comes to history, the Midland Hotel is truly captivating.
The hotel is absolutely incredible, located right in the heart of downtown with a large outdoor patio overlooking all the downtown activity.

Indulge in bold local flavors and craft drinks at Barrel and Derrick, the chef-driven onsite restaurant, or at the White Buffalo Bar. The suite was fit for a Texas oilman. It is one of the newest and largest accommodations in Odessa, featuring modern and functional designs. The suite includes a king-size bed, a separate living room, a desk work area, double TVs, a spacious bathroom, and a bar area. It was fantastic and completely unexpected.

If you love colorful wall art and artwork you can tour the city and see some beautiful creations from local artist on the streets.

Visitors have the opportunity to feed the animals and engage in conversation; many creatures respond in delightful ways. Every animal I spoke to exhibited some form of acknowledgment, making it an incredibly memorable experience!

They create an inviting atmosphere that makes you feel like part of the family, complete with warm Texas smiles and cheerful “Howdy y’all!” It’s no surprise that USA TODAY has named it one of the “10 BEST” places to visit—Fossil Rim truly is remarkable! Omni Dallas (Downtown) – Dallas, TX
Luxury and Executive Suites
If you’re looking for a great hotel in downtown Dallas, but want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the city, then Omni is the perfect choice. I’ve stayed here more than ten times in the last five years and absolutely love this hotel experience.
The hotel features a large restaurant row with over five different eateries, as well as a spacious sports bar called “The Owner’s Box.” I’ve enjoyed meals at every restaurant and the food is always served HF&D, Hot, Fresh and Delicious. You can enjoy a variety of experiences, including chef-driven dining and sweet and savory treats from one of Omni’s master pastry chefs. This sophisticated 23-story hotel property offers a perfect blend of uncompromised service, luxurious accommodations, and an ideal location. If you’re into fitness, you will appreciate the fully equipped, state-of-the-art fitness center, the full-service Mokara Spa, and the heated infinity swimming pool that provides stunning views of downtown.
There is ample parking, shopping, and plenty of cocktail and coffee options in and around the area. Additionally, the hotel is attached to the convention center, making it an ideal location for major events.
We’ve stayed in three different suites, each offering amazing views, beautiful modern decor, and plenty of space. The bathrooms are spacious and feature both showers and tubs for soaking. I truly love the Omni luxury experience, which is always affordable and provides fantastic service.
Vintage Grain Silo, Lampasas, TX
Inside a 2-Bedroom Silo
Located in the Texas Hill Country, this grain silo dates back to the early 1900s and was once known for its healing powers. In the late 19th century, Lampasas gained fame as a health resort due to its sulfur springs, attracting visitors from all over Texas who came to bathe in the “healing waters.â€
Today, Lampasas offers a variety of attractions, including cattle, horses, retail shops, antique stores, and restaurants. It’s also conveniently close to the world-famous Fredericksburg, Texas, which has something for everyone. However, I want to focus on one of the most unique places to stay in Texas—a grain silo! Yes, a grain silo!
If you’re not familiar with grain silos, let me explain. Grain silos are structures used for storing and preserving grain, with a history that stretches back millennia. They evolved from simple pits to modern, efficient structures. Early examples, like those found in the Levant, date back 11,000 years, while the modern tower silo emerged in the 1870s, with Fred Hatch building the first one in Spring Grove, Illinois, in 1873.
My family had many silos on our ranches, but I had never stayed in one—until now. You can experience this unique stay at a charming little ranch known as the Ponderosa in the Lampasas area. The silo is decorated in a stylish western theme, perfect for immersing yourself in the heart of the Hill Country.
This is the ideal place to relax and escape the city lights. You can enjoy nights of stargazing, breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, all while listening to the peaceful sounds of nature surrounded by majestic live oaks.
Omni Houston Hotel and Makara Spa – Houston, TX
Galleria, Executive, and Parlor Suites
Located in the heart of Houston’s cultural center, the Omni Houston is a magnificent property. It is surrounded by some of the city’s best restaurants, shops, and car dealerships, all just steps away. The pool area resembles a resort pool, offering plenty of space to relax. If you enjoy watching birds, you’ll be delighted to see two local resident black swans; they even have designated feeding times. I know this because we’ve spent several hours talking and watching them by the pool area.
The suites are cozy, beautifully decorated, and richly appointed. The amenities in the guest rooms and suites will spoil you, making it hard to stay anywhere else. Each spacious room welcomes you with elegant décor and exquisite appointments. Outside your window, you can enjoy magnificent skyline views or look out onto one of our outdoor pools. From our Deluxe Rooms to the Presidential Suite, you’ll find comforts beyond compare.
If you’re visiting the cultural center of Houston, this is a fantastic option for your stay. As an Omni 4-Diamond property, you will experience pampering and relaxation throughout your visit.
Longneck Manor – Fredericksburg, TX
Villa and Giraffe Barn Suite
If you’re an animal lover like me, visiting Longneck Manor could be one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life. I’ve had the chance to spend time with many exotic animals, including tigers, hippos, lions, mountain lions, rhinos, and giraffes. I believe that connecting with animals nourishes the soul and creates magical moments.
Situated on a stunning 100-acre ranch in the Texas Hill Country, Longneck Manor is inviting, clean, organized, and absolutely beautiful. They offer a variety of engaging activities during your visit, including learning about and feeding the animals. One unique activity is painting with giraffes using safe, edible paint, along with many others.
When you stay in one of the luxurious villas, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the rolling hills, pastures, rock formations, and beautiful water features from your private viewing deck. Each villa features large floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the giraffe and rhino pastures, allowing you to watch the animals as they explore and relax in their outdoor spaces. You’ll also have exclusive, hands-on animal interactions and learn about Longneck Manor’s dedicated conservation efforts, discovering how you can contribute to animal protection in the wild. Each villa has a private deck with comfortable seating, perfect for enjoying uninterrupted views of the African waterhole frequented by the giraffes and rhinos.
In my opinion, the Giraffe Suite/Barn is the best accommodation option—a truly magical experience. This unique, luxurious overnight stay inside the giraffe barn can accommodate up to four people. You’ll enjoy a spacious 1,200 sq. ft. suite, complete with a living room, kitchen, and a master bedroom on the second level of the state-of-the-art 10,000 sq. ft. giraffe barn. The suite features a king-size bed and a sofa bed in the living room, with picture windows that overlook the family giraffe stall, putting you nose-to-nose with the giraffes. Additionally, your Giraffe Suite is climate-controlled with a separate air handling system from the rest of the barn.
Guests of the Giraffe Suite/barn will enjoy private animal encounters from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM and again from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM each day. These sessions offer educational opportunities to meet, feed, and interact with the animals. During your stay, you will be assigned an Animal Care Specialist who will facilitate these interactions, including private painting sessions with the giraffes and making skin prints with the rhinos. Weather and staff permitting, guests may also participate in training sessions and mudding with the rhinos.
In full disclosure, I haven’t been able to make this experience happen yet. We’ve tried on several occasions, but due to our travel schedules, media commitments, and hosting events nationwide, the timing hasn’t worked out. However, I encourage you to make the visit; it’s well worth the wait and will truly nourish your soul.
Historical Stonewall Motor Lodge – Fredericksburg, TX
LBJ’s Press Room Suite – The Texas Whitehouse
I recently discovered a cozy little motor lodge from the 1960s, located in the beautiful Hill Country of Texas, just down the road from President LBJ’s Ranch—often referred to as the Texas White House. These days, whenever we hear about a new place to visit, we always investigate before setting out to ensure it meets our expectations.
After doing our research, we learned that the lodge was originally built in 1964. This restored L-shaped motel combines modern luxury with a retro twist, featuring 12 remodeled rooms and four private cabins, all true to their mid-century modern roots, along with five RV sites.
Intrigued, we loaded up our car and headed to the lovely Stonewall Motor Lodge in Stonewall, Texas, which is right next to Fredericksburg. The drive was quaint and relaxing. We reserved the Press Room for our weekend getaway to enjoy the Hill Country.
As soon as we arrived and laid our eyes on the lodge, I knew we had made the right decision. It was perfect—like a shining star alongside the roadside, reminiscent of the classic motor lodges from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. The lodge had been completely refurbished and featured a rooftop deck, colorful and cozy rooms, large showers, comfortable beds, and inviting outdoor living areas. The expansive outdoor barn area included seating spaces, a bar, fans, and windows offering views of the wildlife. There was also an outdoor fire pit and a grilling area beneath the large Hill Country trees, which were home to plenty of deer. I’m serious when I say there were loads of deer—we counted ten and spotted a big Texas buck on our first visit to the barn. The next morning, when we looked out the window, we saw so many deer that we couldn’t count them all. It was magical!
I chose the Press Room because I believe that every travel experience should include a mix of history, education, fun, delicious food, and a few tasty cocktails. With that combination, it’s sure to be the perfect travel experience.
The Press Room was fantastic. If these walls could talk… Originally reserved for the press corps eager to capture a photo of President Lyndon B. Johnson during his visits to the ranch, this room is steeped in the history of the nearby Texas White House. It features a small kitchenette with a table and various historical photos. It’s cozy and offers plenty of space.
If you’re looking for a unique Texas travel experience, this is the place, and it’s just down the road from Blake the Rhino. You can stop by and say hello!
The Rhinory – Fredericksburg, TX
Meeting Blake the White Rhino
I was incredibly excited when I learned about and booked this new travel adventure that I hardly slept for two nights before leaving! It combines some of my greatest passions: endangered species, history, tasty wines, and unique travel destinations. The best part? It’s an affordable experience that everyone can enjoy, while learning about the historical significance of the endangered Southern White Rhino population.
The Rhinory is in Fredericksburg, nestled in the beautiful Hill Country of Texas, and it is truly worth every second of your time. Visitors have the opportunity to meet and interact with Big Blake, a majestic and gentle endangered White Rhino. During this experience, you can also enjoy some delightful wines. While drinking is optional, you can fully appreciate the encounter without indulging in wine. (Please note that reservations are required for the Rhino visit.)
Their 55-acre ranch in Fredericksburg is conveniently located, but as you pass through the gates, you’ll enter a whole new world. There is a designated area where you’ll get up close and personal with Big Blake. The rhino keeper will guide you through the experience, teaching you about the rhino and potentially allowing you to feed, touch, or rub him. This is an unforgettable experience that will leave a lasting impression. All revenue generated from this experience goes to the International Rhino Foundation to support rhino conservation efforts worldwide. Blakes BarnÂ
Hotel Otto – Fort Worth, Texas
Private Bungalow
As I was driving down White Settlement Road, listening to music in my car, I spotted it—Fort Worth’s first micro-resort. I had to take a moment to reflect; it was so cool and impressive, appearing out of nowhere like an old West outlaw riding into Fort Worth from West Texas. Then, it hit me: I remembered Chef Love telling me about this intimate and innovative micro-resort he was building when I had him on my TV and radio show on the TCN Network a few years ago.
Hotel Otto is truly the most intimate and innovative micro-resort in Fort Worth. When you mention it’s a micro-resort, people often say, “What are you talking about? This is Texas. We don’t have small things here.†But yes, we do! Welcome to Hotel Otto, named after the Italian word for “eight.” The Italian-inspired design and hospitality approach stem from Chef Love’s affection for the simple yet delicious lifestyle of Italy’s Amalfi Coast. By combining Italian charm with a signature Texas flair, Hotel Otto offers a unique experience that attracts visitors from far and wide. It’s a special little place hidden among Cowtown’s big structures.
Each of the generously appointed bungalows—as tiny home rooms—features a queen-size bed with high-thread-count Frette linens and duvet, a full bath with a stand-up shower, a lower patio, and a full deck patio on the roof, accessed by a circular staircase. You’ll also find a full minibar stocked with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and snacks.
If you’re hungry, you can enjoy the acclaimed restaurant, Gemelle, helmed by Chef Love. The savory aromas of Italian dishes waft through the air over the resort, making it unforgettable. In addition to that, you can relax by the pool or take a stroll on bikes around the property.
Hotel Otto is truly unique and worth a visit. You won’t find any cowboys, cattle, or horses roaming the property; instead, you will discover Fort Worth’s first micro-resort, fit for a king or queen in a micro Cowtown style. You will love it because it offers an unforgettable experience.

Historic Stagecoach Inn – Salado, TX
Any Room or Suite
My dad used to take us here as kids, and it was a big deal to stop, stay, and enjoy the surroundings. I was excited to hear that they went through a major renovation and are now open for guests to enjoy. While we haven’t revisited since the renovation, we’ve driven by and kept track of the project. It looks fabulous!
Originally opened in 1860, the Stagecoach Inn is a Texas landmark. It has been known by other names in the past, such as the Salado Hotel and Shady Villa Hotel, but it is best recognized as the Stagecoach Inn. As the second oldest continuously running inn or hotel in the state, travelers have parked their wagons, horses, or vehicles at this iconic inn for over 160 years.

I hope you’re having a fantastic year so far in 2025. We travel across the USA frequently, road tripping in search of delicious food, creative chefs, and unique travel destinations. We wanted to explain what goes into speaking Texan.
Talking Texan involves various elements: syntax, cadence, pronunciation, and vocabulary. The most important thing to remember is that the “g†in the suffix “-ing†is often silent, so “fixing to†is pronounced as “fixin’ to.â€
That traditional Texas twang—think Matthew McConaughey’s slow, Southern drawl—is evolving, though. Researchers at UT Austin found that about 80 percent of Texans had a classic Texas accent in the 1980s, but today only about a third of Texans do.
While the unique Texas dialect may be changing, these 10 iconic Texas sayings remain popular. If you’re moving to the DFW area, get ready to hear them regularly!
1. Word – Y’all
“Y’all†is a contraction for “you all,†and it’s the very heart of Texan speak. If you want to address more than one person, it’s never “you guys,†it’s “y’all.†(“All y’all†will also work.)
2. Word – Howdy
In place of hello, say “howdy.†It’s a greeting as Texan as cowboy boots and the Alamo. It’s friendly and casual, and it works quite well with a “y’all†at the end — howdy, y’all!
3. Don’t mess with Texas
You’ve no doubt seen this phrase on everything from T-shirts to belt buckles. It’s been the unofficial slogan of the Lone Star State since 1985. While the rest of the country thinks it’s just a catchphrase, true Texans know it’s part of an
4. Everything’s bigger in Texas
It’s true. Everything is bigger in Texas, from people’s hair to their pickup trucks. Dallas leaves no doubt that it’s a big, bold city —  B and G throughout the city. Tourists can stand in between the letters for one big (and cool) photo opp. Which leads to the next famous Texas saying …
5. Bigger’n Dallas
You’d use this expression when you want to say something is immediately noticeable. “Look at him up there bigger’nDallas!â€
6. Fixin’ to
This is basically the state verb of Texas. There’s really nothing to fix, though — this Texas saying means that you’re about to do something. Example: “I’m fixin’ to leave.â€
7. All git-out
This means to a great degree, exceedingly, or as much as possible. As in: “She was happier’n all git-out!â€
8. This ain’t my first rodeo
When you’ve been there and done that, this is the Texas saying you’d use. It means you’re no fool. You know exactlywhat you’re doing.
9. Hissy fit
You don’t want to mess with a Texan who’s throwing a hissy fit. This is an all-out tantrum with hollerin’, feet stompin’ — the works.
10. Coke vs SodaÂ
Texans never ask for a soda, soft drink, or pop. It’s Coke — no matter what kind of carbonated refreshment they want.
What It Means To “Talk Texanâ€
